The recent rulings by the U.S. Supreme Court on California's Prop 8 and the Defense of Marriage Act have already had an effect on same-sex marriage across the state. However, in the long run, the rulings will affect same-sex divorce too. While a newly married same-sex couple may have not yet considered this impact, it could be significant in their future.

Take care of finances before divorce in California

When divorce proceedings and financial troubles go hand-in-hand, it can be difficult for some California residents to decide which to take care of first. However, in a recent piece on the subject, a financial adviser suggests taking care of as many financial problems as possible before moving forward with the dissolution of a marriage because bankruptcy can carry certain consequences if it is undertaken during or after a divorce.

Charlie Sheen seeks to terminate child support

California residents may be interested to hear of a recent family law issue involving Charlie Sheen. The famous actor recently filed a motion to terminate child support paid to the mother of two of his children, Brooke Mueller. He believes that she is using the money to pay for rehab, which he has paid for in the past and is no longer his responsibility.

U.S. Supreme Court rules on adoption case

California residents might be interested to learn of the Supreme Court decision to rule in favor of the adoptive parents in the case of Adoptive Couple v. Baby Girl. The case centered on whether the biological father, who is a member of a Cherokee tribe, could stop the adoption using the Indian Child Welfare Act. The Supreme Court overruled the decision of the South Carolina Supreme Court that sent the child to live with her biological father.
