Judge denies request to toss out divorce deal

California couples might be interested to learn that a judge denied the former CEO of the Dodgers' request that her former divorce deal be thrown out. In her request, she had argued that the amount of money that she received in the divorce deal in October 2011 was invalid because she was misled about how much the team was really worth. She alleged that her ex-husband, the former owner of the Dodgers, cheated her out of $770 million in their divorce deal because he misrepresented some of the team's assets.

According to the judge's ruling, the woman did not present enough evidence to prove that she should have received a greater divorce settlement. However, the woman contended that her ex-husband had full knowledge of what the team was worth, which turned out to be a record settlement exceeding $2 billion, when they were drawing up their divorce settlement. Her ex-husband's lawyers counter that she was provided with the team's financial documents before the divorce and claim that the onus was on her to do due diligence.

The woman's attorney is not discouraged by the judge's ruling; he stated that they plan on appealing the ruling and asserted confidence that the original deal, which was "massively unfair," will be set aside. Court documents that were filed early on in the divorce case show that she estimated the value of the team to be at approximately $2 billion.

Even after a divorce settlement is reached, it could still be altered in circumstances in which assets were hidden or the full worth of an asset was deliberately concealed. A divorce attorney might be able to assist individuals in such situations with winning an appeal to modify an existing settlement.
