Divorce has some positive aspects

The termination of a marriage is undoubtedly a stressful and emotional time for most couples in California, but a divorce can bring some benefits. People who are aware of these positive aspects may be able to make a more informed decision to leave an unhappy marriage.

Many studies have shown that people are healthier after leaving an unhappy marriage. A marriage that is full of conflict can easily be worse on a person's health than if that person was single. Unhappy marriages are associated with a higher risk for cancer, diabetes, depression, heart disease and arthritis. Another benefit to leaving an unhappy marriage is that a person's financial outlook may improve. Researchers from the University of Connecticut, National Institute of Aging and Social Security Administration found that women who divorced and never remarried had higher earnings growth compared to their married counterparts. They were also more likely to delay taking out their Social Security benefits, allowing them to make more money over the course of their lifetime.

Divorce may surprisingly produce some tax benefits as well. For example, it may allow a divorced spouse to avoid the Alternative Minimum Tax. Although the AMT was originally enacted to limit the amount of deductions wealthy taxpayers could take, it is now impacting many middle class married couples. Health insurance may also be less expensive for unmarried individuals as well.

Many parents worry about the possible effect of a divorce on their children. However, kids can appreciate being involved in two happy and conflict-free homes rather than one that is filled with tension and arguments. And if their parents ever remarry other partners, they will be happy in knowing that studies have shown that people in their second marriages are less likely to get divorced again.
