Child custody battle between Bode Miller and ex-girlfriend ends

Unmarried parents in different states may find that child custody issues can lead to many complications. Legal battles in such circumstances often take months to be finalized. California readers may be interested to learn that the bitter child custody fight between Bode Miller, an Olympic skier, and his former girlfriend has finally been settled.

In addition to the battle for custody of the child, conflict also arose over the amount of money the mother demanded for child support. The couple had a brief relationship while both were in California, and this resulted in a pregnancy. It was reported that Bode Miller had no interest in the child when he first learned about the pregnancy, and this motivated the mother to accept a scholarship in another state.

However, when the mother relocated to New York to study at Columbia University while she was pregnant, Bode filed for custody of the unborn child in California. Although a family court in New York ordered the mother to hand the baby over to the father when he was born, an Appellate court reversed this ruling because the child's birthplace was New York and not California. After months of the baby being with his father, he was ultimately reunited with his mother. The two parents have recently reached an agreement, and the mother will share joint child custody of the 18-month-old boy with Bode Miller and his current wife.

The psychological impact that such issues could have on a small child is immeasurable, and California parents may want to do everything they can to protect their children from similar trauma. Obtaining the services of a family law professional as soon as potential issues become evident may serve to avoid unpleasant litigation. In this way, known legal issues related to child custody may be anticipated and addressed before they arise.
