Preparing for property division in divorce

Ask 100 people what's the worst part of a divorce and you're bound to get 100 different answers. That's because it can be one of the most painful experiences that life can throw at you. Aside from the emotional trauma, you've got to sit down and hash out the details of child custody, alimony, child support and property division. So, let's reevaluate: ask 100 people what the worst part of a divorce is while they're going through property division and 99 will tell you, "property division."

That's because many have given their blood, sweat and tears to get where they are in life, purchasing a good home, buying a reliable car or starting a solid business. To be told that you have to divide all those things can be heart wrenching, but that's the nature of the beast. With that said, there are things you can do to ease the pain, but if you're planning to divorce soon, you should get started as promptly as possible.

  1. Locate all your financial documents, make sure they are in a safe place and give copies to a family member or friend you trust. This includes deeds, bank statements, retirement accounts and anything that pertains to your finances.
  2. Ensure that your credit is in order. When you're single, a solid credit score can make all the difference in your new life.
  3. If you don't have any, open credit card and bank accounts in your name.
  4. Start getting a divorce team together. Begin your search with a family law attorney and give him or her a rundown of the situation so you can both begin preparing for the ins and outs of the divorce together.
