Parent-teacher conferences in divorce

Our children's teachers see them almost as much as we do. Spending all day with them gives teachers an insight into their world that sometimes parents don't have. While it's usually grades, assignments and performance that are most discussed at a parent-teacher conference, sometimes other important aspects of our child's life are brought up too. For parents, remaining involved in your child's school life after divorce can be difficult if not on friendly terms with an ex. So how do you make it work? Well, there are a couple of different things you can do.

Single parents, mixed families and even same-sex couples have changed the landscape of the family dynamic and have now become the norm. Schools have taken notice of this change and have become much more user friendly to families in recent years. Requesting a separate parent-teacher conference from that of your ex is completely understandable and oftentimes preferred by a teacher if there are any issues between parents. If your child's teacher is pressed for time, and you just can't seem to match schedules, you could try requesting a Skype session to do the parent-teacher conference virtually.

Fortunately, schools are becoming increasingly flexible when it comes to working with mixed families. Finding the option that works best for you, and staying involved in your child's school life is important. With schools adding resources like online staff directories and virtual conferences, making contact and staying informed is easier now than ever before.

Although co-parenting after divorce can be difficult, schools are making it easier by understanding the challenges single parents face. If you are facing divorce and are concerned with how it may affect your child's lifestyle, or have questions about custody, speaking to a skilled divorce attorney may help.
