Adoption agency files for bankruptcy and closes unexpectedly

Couples who are unable to have their own biological children often look for alternative methods for having the family they want. One option is to contract with an adoption agency in order to adopt a child in need of a loving home. It was likely a shock to thousands of hopeful parents when one well-established agency with offices in California closed without warning.

The Independent Adoption Center, which had its headquarters in this state, had been open for 34 years. The not-for-profit company had facilitated countless adoptions over that time, as it had branches located in several states. The director allegedly notified its clients through electronic mail that it was closing down operations after filing for bankruptcy protection.

Many families were still in the middle of the adoption process and are now concerned that they may lose the child that they have grown to love, or that they may never welcome a baby in spite of the time and resources they had committed to the agency. Most families pay fees of between $10,000 to $20,000, not counting the additional costs in medical and legal expenses. According to one family, there was no advance notification that the agency was in trouble financially.

According to reports, the director of the non-profit received a salary of an estimated $150,000. There are an estimated 1,886 families that were in the process of an adoption through the multiple branches when the doors were shut. California families that have contemplated opening their home to a child may choose to seek the services of an attorney who specializes in family law.
