State looks to reform its adoption laws

Bringing a child into a family is a momentous occasion no matter how the child becomes a member. One of the greatest acts of generosity may be the decision to offer a child a home and family through adoption. Many parents in California have made this decision and are likely the richer for it.

One state has several members of its legislature who have announced their hopes to reform both the adoption and foster care systems. Their stated goals are to attempt to reduce both the time and the expense that are part of the current process. This decision is based in part on the personal experiences of some congressional members who spent much time and effort during the adoption of their own children.

The house speaker recently appointed house members to lead the task force efforts to investigate how the process can be modified. One of those selected to lead the efforts shared that his family spent three years in the process before bringing home his own daughter from another country. In addition to the legislature's decision to study the system, the governor also announced that he would appoint a czar to make revisions to speed the process.

Kentucky has thousands of children who are awaiting a permanent home to call their own. Many of the current policies were enacted as a protection for children; however, some of the procedures may have been intended to benefit the government. The committee intends to spend the summer months on the project. It is likely that there are many families and children in California who are also trying to navigate the adoption system here and may be struggling to find the best process. These families may choose to consult with a family law attorney who can help them obtain their goals of providing a waiting child with a family of his or her own.
