Child support and custody issues can be volatile

When a relationship ends, couples may be able to arrive at a peaceable resolution in many aspects except one. Issues surrounding child support and custody will often lead to rising tensions which can sometimes escalate to volatile levels. There are likely countless California families who have had to wade through this difficult situation.

Family court judges require that parents have a parenting or visitation plan in place for those situations where both parents are fit to spend time with the children. A divorce cannot be finalized until these vital issues are handled in a manner that best represents the needs of the children at the time. These plans usually incorporate set times and places for the parents to exchange physical custody of the children. It is these times that can provoke tensions.

If the parents are dealing with serious conflict involving child-raising concerns such as school problems or support payments, then these exchange times can be detrimental to the emotional or even physical health of one or more parties involved. There have been instances where one parent has tried to make another parent look unfit and thereby lose custody. There have also been those rare exchanges that ended in a fatal confrontation.

Police can do little in these situations unless a violent confrontation has occurred. California parents who worry about potentially dangerous exchanges are entitled to seek assistance in order to remedy the situation. An experienced family law attorney can help a parent who is struggling with child support or custody issues to arrive at an agreement that will ensure the safety and well-being of the children and parents involved.
