Man finally finds family of his own through adoption

It is well known that there are thousands of children in this country who are hoping to find a family of their own one day. However, it is not just minors who need the stability a family can provide through adoption. One 18-year-old California man recently celebrated becoming a permanent member of his former foster family.

While it is unusual for a family to petition to adopt an adult, it does happen on an infrequent basis. The laws were changed in 2012 that allow a person aged 18 to remain in the foster care system and thereby be eligible for adoption until the age of 21, as long as certain circumstances apply. If the young person is still in school, is employed or is struggling to overcome a problem in life, then he or she can remain in foster care. This particular young man had been in and out of the system since he was a toddler after his biological mother's death.

He did return briefly to the care of his biological father until the father was found to be unfit as a parent. The boy was then in and out of other foster homes until he arrived at his current home approximately three years ago. What was supposedly a temporary placement became long term when the teen asked the foster family to allow him to stay.

Last year, only 15 adults were adopted by families. While this type of adoption is rare, there are many other young people who are awaiting the same opportunity. California families who are seeking information on how to begin the process of adopting a young person or child can obtain more information from an attorney who specializes in family law.
