Former congressman Weiner and wife stop contested divorce case

Life in the public spotlight often comes with intense pressure and scrutiny. When a public figure falls from grace, the ramifications often result in personal lives becoming fodder for media sources. This may be one reason why disgraced former congressman Anthony Weiner and his estranged wife decided to pull their contested divorce from the courts. Though neither party lives in California, most are familiar with the circumstances surrounding this impending dissolution.

In May of 2017, the former congressman admitted guilt in sending inappropriate text messages to a minor. Shortly after that confession, his wife announced that she would be seeking a divorce. This was a change from the supportive role that Huma Abedin had played in her husband's life after it was announced in 2011 that Weiner had shared improper images via text messages.

The decision to withdraw the contested divorce petition was purportedly made in an effort to shield the couple's child from the publicity and stress of a public court battle. Abedin, who is employed as an aide by the former First Lady Hillary Clinton, stated through her attorney that the couple will seek a private divorce going forward. The court appearance was purportedly intended as a compliance conference; however, the attorney for Abedin presented papers with both parties signatures requesting that the case be dropped.

The judge then entered an order for the contested divorce to be discontinued. There was no further information concerning how the dissolution will be handled in the future. California has its own laws concerning division of property and assets, though there are many issues over which divorcing couples may fail to reach an accord. Those who are headed for a difficult divorce may find themselves best served by seeking the guidance of an experienced family law attorney.
