Some may approach fresh start after contested divorce differently

For the majority of couples, the ideal marriage will last until the death of one spouse. Unfortunately, that is seemingly rare, as approximately half of all marriages will end in divorce rather than death. California couples who are headed for a contested divorce may fear that the process will drag on forever.

Recently, one woman elected to put a positive spin on the fact that her four-year marriage ended in a divorce. She took the unusual approach of posting an advertisement on a website that allows users to list items they wish to sell. This particular Craigslist ad boasted that the former wife would be selling all of her former husband's belongings that were still in her possession, as well as many household goods.

She stated in her ad -- which she later deleted -- that she was celebrating her freedom after a lengthy divorce. She claimed that her former husband had been abusive and she had felt trapped in a bad relationship. Her posting listed her intentions of providing snacks and beverages to those who came to her garage sale as the woman sought to rid herself of the reminders of her unhappy marriage. The woman stated that her purpose for describing her garage sale in such a manner was to encourage others who may also be in an unhappy or unsafe relationship.

The news source that reported on her planned sale did verify that her former spouse pleaded guilty to domestic violence. He declined to comment on his former wife's description of her publicly advertised sale. Though this woman's decision to host a public celebration in the form of a garage sale may not appeal to everyone, there are other ways to move past the ordeal of a contested divorce. California residents who are preparing for their own marriage dissolutions may choose to seek out an experienced family law attorney who can help guide them through the process as efficiently as possible.
